Best time to visit Kenya for school trips
Kenya works year-round for school trips — but some months are better for specific activities. Here's the practical guide to timing your trip.
Kenya's Seasons
Kenya has four distinct seasons that affect trip planning:
Long rains (March–May) — the heaviest rainfall period. Roads can become difficult, some outdoor activities are limited. Generally best to avoid for school trips, although the landscape is at its greenest.
Short rains (October–November) — brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt activities. The landscape is green and lush. This is actually a great period for school trips — fewer tourists, lower prices, and the rain usually falls in short bursts.
Dry season 1 (June–September) — cool and dry. This is peak season for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. Temperatures are comfortable (18-25°C). The Great Migration is in the Masai Mara during July-October.
Dry season 2 (December–February) — hot and dry. Excellent weather with clear skies. Good wildlife viewing. Temperatures range from 22-30°C.
Kenya's equatorial location means temperatures are consistent year-round: 20-30°C at most program locations.
Best Months by Activity
Different activities peak at different times:
Wildlife viewing — July to October is prime time. Animals are easier to spot near water sources, and the Great Migration passes through the Masai Mara.
Permaculture and garden projects — year-round. The gardens operate continuously, and different seasons offer different learning opportunities (planting, growing, harvesting).
Water projects — dry season (June-September, December-February) is best for construction and installation work. The impact of water access is also most visible during dry periods.
Conservation projects — year-round. Wildlife conservation work happens every day regardless of season.
Cultural immersion — year-round. Community life continues through all seasons. Different times of year offer different cultural experiences and celebrations.
School Calendar Alignment
The best time for your trip depends on when your school calendar allows:
UK schools:
— October half-term (late Oct): great weather, end of short rains, fewer tourists
— Easter break (Mar-Apr): end of long rains, green landscapes, shoulder season pricing
— End of summer term (Jun-Jul): peak wildlife season, warm and dry
US schools:
— Spring break (Mar-Apr): moderate weather, some rain possible, good pricing
— Summer (Jun-Aug): peak season, best wildlife, warm and dry
UAE and Singapore international schools:
— Winter break (Dec-Jan): hot and dry, excellent weather, good wildlife
— Spring break (Mar-Apr): moderate, some rain possible
Australian schools:
— Term 2 break (Jul): peak wildlife, cool and dry
— Term 3 break (Sep-Oct): excellent conditions, migration season
— Summer holidays (Dec-Jan): hot and dry, great weather
Our Programs Run Year-Round
Unlike safari companies that depend on seasonal wildlife patterns, our community programs operate every single day of the year.
The permaculture gardens are always growing. The water systems need maintenance year-round. Conservation work never stops. Community life continues regardless of season.
This means the best time for your school trip is when your school calendar allows. We don't have an 'off season' because our programs aren't built around tourist seasons — they're built around community needs.
That said, we're happy to advise on optimal dates based on your specific curriculum goals and activity preferences. If wildlife is a priority, we'll steer you toward June-October. If you want the greenest landscapes and best pricing, October-November might be ideal.
Weather & What to Pack
Kenya's equatorial location means relatively consistent temperatures year-round. Here's what to expect:
Daytime temperatures: typically 22-28°C at our program locations
Morning/evening temperatures: can drop to 15-18°C, especially June-August
Rainfall: varies by season (see above), but rain is usually brief and warm
Packing essentials for any season:
— Layers for morning and evening (a fleece or light jacket)
— Rain jacket or lightweight waterproof
— Sun protection (hat, sunscreen SPF50, sunglasses)
— Closed-toe shoes for fieldwork and walking
— Lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime
— Long sleeves and trousers for evenings (mosquito protection)

Booking Timeline
Timing your booking is almost as important as timing your trip.
9-12 months ahead — ideal booking window. You get the best date selection, time for thorough preparation, and often the best pricing.
6-9 months ahead — still good availability for most periods. Some popular dates (October half-term, Easter) may have limited availability.
3-6 months ahead — possible but tight. Less date flexibility and compressed preparation time.
Less than 3 months — we can sometimes accommodate last-minute groups, but preparation quality suffers and availability is limited.
Popular periods that book earliest:
— UK October half-term
— Easter break
— June-July (end of UK summer term)
— July-August (US summer)
If you're considering a trip, the best time to reach out is now — even if the trip is a year away.
Book 9-12 months ahead for the best dates and preparation time.
